Read this passage from Dragonwings by Laurence Yep.

I had been in the demon land for only ten months, so it would have been about January of the demons' year 1904, when we met Mr. Alger. I remember it was a gray, wintry day. We were making the rounds when we saw one of the horseless carriages stranded by the sidewalk and a demon in a big overcoat standing beside it. His driving cap was pushed back, and he was scratching his forehead in a puzzled way. The metal hood on the front of the horseless had been folded back on top so you could see into its innards.

"Whoa, Red Rabbit." Father pulled at the reins and Red Rabbit stopped. Father set the brake, and as an extra precaution he put the wooden block behind the wheel.

"Can I help?" he asked.

The demon was a big, cheerful-looking demon with a bland, round face. He eyed father. "I dunno, John." Many demons called Tang men John because, they insisted, they never could get the hang of our real names. "You know anything about horselesses?"
Which detail from the setting leads Father and the man to communicate?

how does greed frame motives the criminal in black peter a red headed league

Answers

Answer:

One of the more predominant themes in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories is man versus man. 'The Red-Headed League' is no exception. In addition, one finds themes of reason and greed as Sherlock prevents another crime based on minuscule evidence.

Man Versus Man

Based on the reputation Sherlock Holmes has garnered through literature and the movies, it is hard to imagine anyone presenting him with a difficult challenge. He has shown an aptitude to solve crimes and mysteries before the clues have even been revealed. In the story 'The Red-Headed League,' Sherlock confronts an individual with whom he has 'had one or two little turns.' These previous encounters provide incentive for Sherlock to capture this villain. It also enhances the theme of man versus man.

Sherlock must prevent the antagonist, John Clay, from stealing gold bullion from 'one of the principal London banks.' With John Clay's plan already in motion, Sherlock looks for clues that will help him develop a counter move. When Sherlock finally confronts John Clay, he admits that his 'idea was very new and effective.' Clay, in turn, gives credit to Sherlock for having 'done the thing very completely. I must compliment you.' Although they go at each other as adversaries, trying to outwit the other, when their conflict is resolved, they acknowledge the other's talents. But what drives this conflict?

Greed

Greed comes in to play in the story on two different fronts. The first is with the pawnbroker, Jabez Wilson. He becomes Sherlock's client. He explains to Sherlock that he has 'a business already,' but was still enticed by earning four pounds a week to 'copy out the Encyclopedia Brittannica.' When this supposed job terminates, Vincent is upset at losing 'four pound a week.' Despite having his own business and employing an assistant, he bemoans the loss of this additional, yet minimal, income. The lure of money creates his current predicament.

John Clay, Sherlock's adversary, is motivated by illegally acquiring thousands in gold bullion. John Clay is a habitual criminal who is known for being a 'murderer, thief, smasher, and forger.' Knowing that all that gold sits unattended in the cellar of a bank is too big of a lure for a criminal such as Clay. It motivates him to contrive a plan to lure out the pawnbroker from his house so he can dig a tunnel from that basement to the bank. All in an effort to become rich. Greed motivates both characters to act in a manner that places them in some difficulty.

Man Versus Self

Sherlock is known for his adherence to, and belief in, logic. This practice is evident as he makes his observations while attempting to solve the mystery behind the red-headed league. Watson mentions to Sherlock at the conclusion of the story that he 'reasoned it out beautifully.' Watson also notes that Sherlock's 'exactness and astuteness represented. . . the reaction against the poetic and contemplative mood which occasionally predominated him.' With these words, Watson indicates that there is a conflict within Sherlock in which reason battles against his artistic nature.

In 'The Red-headed League' Sherlock attends a performance 'gently waving his long, thin fingers in time to the music.' He is enthralled by the music. It isn't until the 'lust of the chase would suddenly come upon him, and that his brilliant reasoning power would rise.' Sherlock needs cases such as this to engage his reasoning prowess. Perhaps he uses music as a means to balance the two sides of his personality, but when he goes without the mental challenge, it wears on him, and he finds life to be a bit dull and boring.

Socrates asserts his expertise while debating various ideas with Glaucon. Hence option B is correct.

What is dialogue?

Dialogue is defined as a focused and purposeful discussion, a place of decency and equality where people of different viewpoints can listen to and converse with one other. Though speech can be used for a variety of things in literature, its three main aims are to: set the scene's tone and atmosphere. Make your characters known. advance the narrative.

Through Glaucon's comments to their conversation, we are able to clarify our understanding of what Socrates says. In Republic II, Glaucon and Socrates debate whether justice is good in and of itself or just for its own sake. The two guys also want to know whether kind of life the just one or the unfair one—is ideal. Socrates contends that leading a good life is actually preferable, contrary to Glaucon's claim that an unjust life is the best.

Thus, Socrates asserts his expertise while debating various ideas with Glaucon. Hence option B is correct.

The Ornithopter Many people know Leonardo da Vinci today as an artist, and it is true that he was indeed a great painter and sculptor, but he was also an inventor and one of the first individuals in recorded history to draft detailed plans for a flying machine. In order to make a living, Leonardo often depended upon wealthy individuals who would commission work from him. That means they would hire him and pay him to create specific work they wanted. In 1482, when he was 30 years old, Leonardo heard of an opportunity to work for Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. The duke, however, did not want a painter; he wanted a military engineer to help him defend the city against its enemies. This was an excellent opportunity that would pay Leonardo well, but Leonardo was a peaceful man. He considered war to be “a beastly madness.” He preferred to make things of beauty. Leonardo made the decision that he could tolerate making weapons if the resources the duke could provide would also allow him to create things he loved. He sent a letter to the duke detailing his skills in designing and building weapons. “I will assemble catapults, mangonels, trebuchets and other instruments of wonderful efficiency…I will make an infinite number of items for attack and defense,” he wrote. Leonardo’s letter convinced the duke of his talents, and he got the job. He set about designing the weapons that the duke desired. But Leonardo was infinitely creative, always thinking of new things, new ideas—he could not be limited to weapons alone. One idea that he had not mentioned in his application was the ornithopter. It was not a weapon of war, and it was not something that the duke had asked for, but Leonardo went ahead and designed it anyway. Leonardo was fascinated by the idea of flight. The word “ornithopter” comes from two words meaning “bird” and “wings.” And on first inspection, his plans resembled a bird’s wings attached to a human being’s arms. He concluded that a human being’s arms were neither strong enough nor light enough to stay in the air for long. So, his design included sets of foot pedals and levers that were operated with the hands. He created detailed plans and presented them to the duke, uncertain of how the duke would react to a design for which he didn’t ask. As it turned out, the duke was very impressed with the ornithopter, but it wasn’t Leonardo’s innovation that excited him. He immediately thought of the ways this machine could be used in war. If a spy could fly over the enemy’s camp, imagine what information he could gather! This was not what Leonardo had intended for his beautiful flying machine. But how Leonardo felt about war turned out not to matter in the end. His ornithopter was never built—along with his designs for tanks, parachutes, diving suits, machine guns, and even robots that he created for the duke. The ideas of Leonardo da Vinci were centuries ahead of the technology needed to make them. Read the excerpt from "The Ornithopter." He created detailed plans and presented them to the duke, uncertain of how the duke would react to a design for which he didn't ask. Which type of conflict is expressed in this excerpt? individual vs. nature individual vs. individual individual vs. self individual vs. society
