Read the excerpt from chapter 29 of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

In spite of having been at St. James’s, Sir William was so completely awed by the grandeur surrounding him, that he had but just courage enough to make a very low bow, and take his seat without saying a word; and his daughter, frightened almost out of her senses, sat on the edge of her chair, not knowing which way to look. Elizabeth found herself quite equal to the scene, and could observe the three ladies before her composedly. Lady Catherine was a tall, large woman, with strongly-marked features, which might once have been handsome. Her air was not conciliating, nor was her manner of receiving them such as to make her visitors forget their inferior rank. She was not rendered formidable by silence; but whatever she said was spoken in so authoritative a tone, as marked her self-importance, and brought Mr. Wickham immediately to Elizabeth’s mind; and from the observation of the day altogether, she believed Lady Catherine to be exactly what he represented.

Which statement best describes the economic context of the setting?

A. Most guests are uncomfortable with socializing outside of their status.
B. Lady Catherine is approachable despite her high social status.
C. The guests are assigned to seats.
D. Sir William finds the setting familiar.

Evaluate the poem

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Answers

Nothing Gold Can Stay is a short poem of eight lines that contains subtle yet profound messages within metaphor, paradox and allegory. It is a compressed piece of work in which each word and sound plays its part in full.

Written when Frost was 48 years old, an experienced poet, whose life had known grief and family tragedy, the poem focuses on the inevitability of loss - how nature, time and mythology are all subject to cycles.

As with many a Frost poem, close observation of the natural world is the foundation for building poetic truths, inside of which lie hidden messages and ideas.

When the leaves start to show in the season of spring they are perceived as gold, but soon turn to familiar green and before too long they're fading as victims of time.

So it's possible to pick out three distinct associations:

the season of spring - holding on to precious color.
time - and the pace of life.
Eden - how humans experience grief and shame.

Answer:

It expresses the central theme of the entire poem. The concept of lost beauty over time and demonstrating what the depiction of this missing thing is. They are compared to something that everyone envies and wishes they had. Showing that even though there are grains of gold scattered throughout life and passage, they will never be permanent. You will never be able to keep that gold since it will eventually deteriorate. Nothing significant, fools gold, could be represented since if a golden moment remains, you know it was never real.

PART A: READING COMPREHENSION

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

Across Malaysia, our rivers are the main source of tap water. Despite this, Malaysians are still throwing rubbish into the river. River pollution is a threat to safe drinking water in Malaysia. A recent dry spell caused water Selangor's Sungai Langat cannot be utilised for daily use as pollution caused ammoniacal nitrogen levels to rise above permissible levels. There are many ways to reduce the river pollution such as installing grease traps, maintaining septic tanks, and educating the public on the importance of having clean drains in the neighbourhood.

Most of the times, polluted rivers cannot be rehabilitated to their original and natural condition. Nevertheless, minimising drain pollution can be a cost-effective way to improve the condition of the rivers. One of the ways is by installing grease traps to capture oil, and these traps must be regularly maintained. Local authorities will have to carry out enforcement to combat illegal discharge of oil and grease into the sewerage system.

In addition, all septic tanks need to be maintained properly. According to the Malaysia Water Industry Guide 2013, there are 4,380 communal septic tanks and 1,298,207 individual septic tanks in Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan. In Selangor, more than 33,000 old individual septic tanks discharge partially-treated wastewater into drains. The septic tanks must be cleaned of any waste once every three years in order for the tanks to function effectively. If this is done periodically, the level of ammoniacal nitrogen in the river can be reduced significantly.

Lastly, the most important step to reduce river pollution is by educating the public on the importance of having clean drains in the neighbourhood. It will be meaningless to maintain the drains and septic tanks if the amount of pollutants entering drains is not reduced. The local authorities can organise campaigns and activities such as drain clean-ups to educate the public on this issue. All in all, the cleanliness of our rivers should not be ignored. The recent shortage of water
in Selangor and the water treatment plant being shut down show that an abundant resource of water can deplete too if we do not take proper care of our drains and rivers.

Installing grease traps, maintaining septic tanks, and educating the public on the importance of having clean drains in the neighbourhood are some of the ways that can be done to reduce river pollution. By minimising drain pollution and cleaning the septic tanks every three years can help minimise level of ammoniacal nitrogen in the river. Hopefully, the public will be able to be more aware of their wastes as well.

It seems the peasants want to be paid for their work. The nobles, on the other hand, think things are getting out of control. Your first step is to read some evidence from a guy named Jean Froissart. Hes a Frenchman, but hes been to England and seen whats going on first hand. Here is his take on the problem:It is customary in England, as in several other countries, for the nobility to have great privileges over the commonalty, whom they keep in bondage; that is to say, they are bound by law and custom to plough the lands of gentleman, to harvest the grain, to carry it home to the barn, to thrash and winnow it: they are also bound to harvest the hay and carry it home. All these services they are obliged to perform for their lords . . .The evil-disposed in these districts began to rise, saying, they were too severely oppressed; that at the beginning of the world there were no slaves, and that no one ought to be treated as such, unless he had committed treason against his lord, as Lucifer had done against God: but they had done no such thing, for they were neither angels nor spirits, but men formed after the same likeness with their lords, who treated them as beasts. This they would not longer bear, but had determined to be free, and if they laboured or did any other works for their lords, they would be paid for it.[Source: Jean Froissart, Chronicles (The Peasant Revolt)]After reading this evidence, you note that the peasants do a lot of work for the nobles. Still, Froissart calls the peasants the evil-disposed. But why does he think they want to do evil? You decide to pay England a visit and ask both sides a few questions. Here is how your conversation goes:You: Is it really true that you dont get paid at all right now?Peasants: Yeah. Its part of the old system of feudalism. Were supposed to work for the nobles without pay because thats the way its always been. But times have changed. Were growing more food because we have better methods of farming. That benefits the nobles as well as us.You: Yes. Ive heard about that.Peasants: And since the plague killed so many people there have been fewer workers. Without us, nothing gets done. You: Ive read a lot about that too.[You turn to the nobles.]You: What about you? Why are you so dissatisfied? I mean, you dont have to work from sun up to sun down.Nobles: Us? Our very lives are in danger! You didnt read the rest of what Froissart wrote. Robert Salle, a knight, tried to reason with the peasants. Guess what happened to him?Peasants: Hey, that wasnt all of us!
