CHAPTER II—THE SHE-WOLF, an excerpt
From White Fang
By Jack London

Breakfast eaten and the slim camp-outfit lashed to the sled, the men turned their backs on the cheery fire and launched out into the darkness. At once began to rise the cries that were fiercely sad—cries that called through the darkness and cold to one another and answered back. Conversation ceased. Daylight came at nine o'clock. At midday the sky to the south warmed to rose-colour, and marked where the bulge of the earth intervened between the meridian sun and the northern world. But the rose-colour swiftly faded. The grey light of day that remained lasted until three o'clock, when it, too, faded, and the pall of the Arctic night descended upon the lone and silent land.

As darkness came on, the hunting-cries to right and left and rear drew closer—so close that more than once they sent surges of fear through the toiling dogs, throwing them into short-lived panics.

At the conclusion of one such panic, when he and Henry had got the dogs back in the traces, Bill said:

"I wisht they'd strike game somewheres, an' go away an' leave us alone."

"They do get on the nerves horrible," Henry sympathized.

They spoke no more until camp was made.

My first day at school was a completely new experience for me. It is because the atmosphere completely changes for any child. You always stay in the comfort and safety of your own home. However, your first day at school opens door to unknown experiences and opportunities. Much like any other child, I was also scared on my first day. I remember clearly not letting go of my mother’s hand, hesitant to go in the classroom. On my first day, I got up excited and put on my uniform for the first time. The feeling it gave me was so memorable, I can never forget it. As it was my first day, both my parents went to drop me off.I remember seeing the classroom full of little children. Some crying while the others playing with others. I looked at my mother and gave her the look that I didn’t want them to leave. They had to go so I kept crying but eventually, my teacher consoled me.Once I settled in the class, I talked with the other kids and started playing with them. The colourful walls of the classroom fascinated me a lot. We got many toys to play with so it all the other kids also got distracted and stopped crying.

But my grandpa held before me a rosy picture of school life. So I was tempted to go there. My mother took me to school. It was a big building with a lot of different rooms. The headmistress asked me a few questions. I answered them promptly. The Headmistress was pleased. I was admitted to class. The head clerk took me to the class. The class teacher told a story from the Ramayana. I found joy in it. The boys behaved and I did as well. The school broke at 1 pm. I came out of the class and my mother was waiting for me outside. She took me home.

The fact that you see something somewhere, just like the British see that kind of 'lifestyle' of Americans in the movies doesn't mean that it is the same thing in reality, i.e, their lifestyle. a speech on holidays ??

Answers

Good morning to one and all present here and greetings for the day. Today I am going to put forward my ideas on a perfect holiday and I hope your co-operation throughout the time.

Holidays bring joy to our rather monotonous lives. It provides a break and adds a new excitement, a new start to our lives. The word holiday contains a new meaning, a sense of joy and excitement attached to it.

Hence whenever we get some time off from our busy schedule to enjoy a holiday we should enjoy it to our fullest so that we do not have any regrets that although we had time we couldn’t make full benefit of it.

My thoughts for perfect holiday is where I have dreamt to go for a long time. One thing about perfect holiday is that it should be well planned or else there will lot of commotion and confusion which can ruin the perfectness of the holiday.

The amount of fun that you have on the trip can make any holiday a perfect holiday.

BeachIt all depends on how much you are able to enjoy yourself. If you sit with a grumpy face all day during the holiday, doing nothing then obviously it won’t turn out to be a perfect holiday for you.

Create an outline for an argumentative research essay, which you will draft in Lesson 2. The outline will begin with a strong claim, followed by at least three supporting reasons. The evidence that backs up each reason must come from credible sources that you find through research. In its finished state, your outline should show how the claim, reasons, and evidence all relate.
Your outline should include the following elements:
A claim that takes a clear stand on an important, controversial issue
At least three reasons that support the claim
Evidence from at least five sources that backs up your reasons (and the claim, indirectly)
A works-cited page that lists your sources and follows MLA guidelines

Answers

Hi. Your question asks you to outline an argumentative research essay. I can't write an essay for you as this is something very personal and it should be in line with what you have been studying, but I can show you how to do this essay.

First, you should know that an argumentative essay is a text where you will need to argue about something, that is, show your opinion on the subject that is being covered in the essay. This opinion must be accompanied by supporting statements, which are statements that present data to prove that your opinion is correct and show the reader how you arrived at this opinion. This means that you will have to research the topic discussed in your essay and that research should be done from reputable research sources, which will be articles written by experts in the subject you cover, academic books and journals, or websites of respected institutions. These sites usually have the abbreviations "org," "edu" and "gov" in their email addresses.

As your question shows, it is important that you submit at least three supporting details, ie details that support your opinion and these details must come from five credible research sources.

Now, regarding the outline, you should keep in mind that an outline is the "prototype" of your essay. This is where you will place the ideas you will present in the essay, present the organization of the paragraphs, and flag the research sources you will use. This outline should be done in topics, as follows:

Introduction: Where will you present the subject of your essay and your opinion. The introduction should be short and direct.Body: You will present the background Information of your theme, you will present the support details that prove your opinion, always presenting the relevant data and information taken from your research sources. This part is usually made up of two paragraphs, but you can do more if you feel it is necessary. You can also present opinions that are contrary to yours, as long as you present evidence that these opinions are incorrect. Conclusion: You will end the essay in a logical way, presenting with the thought that should be created after reading the facts presented by you.

Lastly, you should create a page where you present the research sources you used, using the MLA guidelines. This should be done on a separate essay page, where you will provide all the information necessary for your essay's readers to be able to find your research sources. This information must be presented in the following order:

Author's last name, followed by a comma. Author's first name, followed by a period. Title of the article, followed by a period. Title of the place where this article can be found, that is, title of the book, website or magazine where the article is found, followed by period. Book or magazine version, if any, followed by period. Publisher's name, followed by period. Year of publication of the article, followed by period. Number of the page where the article can be found or link to the website where the article can be found. Website access date, if the article is found on a website.

THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

How does the author develop the idea that relying on nature was problematic? Please respond in three to five complete sentences, using evidence from the text to support your answer.

Answers

Answer:

We note the author's intriguing statement at the outset when he said "that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make" a match.

Also, he further highlighted how problematic it was to depend on nature when he said "in the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark".

To express the problems further, the author also says that they would have to guard the fire but the fire would still go out sometimes and then they would have to go on long and difficult journeys.

What is the speaker of this poem doing

Answers

Answer:

b). inspecting a stone wall.

Explanation:

The lines are from Robert Frost's poem titled 'Mending Wall.' In the given lines, the speaker is examining the stone wall that has separated the two neighbors. He says that 'something...doesn't love a wall' in order to refer to nature's dislike of this wall as it leads to 'frozen ground' among two neighbors and 'make gaps...swell...burst.' Later he talks about the damage caused to the wall by the hunter's work but he would fix it again but thinks that rabbits may come 'out of hiding.' Thus, this shows that he is examining the wall. Hence, option b is the correct answer.
