How can a writer’s point of view affect the way he or she describes an event?

A.) Point of view can affect what details a writer sees and records.
B.)Point of view can affect when the event took place.
C.) Point of view can affect what facts are true about the event.

Answers

Answer:

C

Explanation:

A writer's point of view can affect the way he or she describes an event because the point of view can affect what facts are true about the event.

The writer may not exactly write word-for-word what happened, but rather what that person thinks happened at the event.

The answer is A.

Explanation:

The POV (Point Of View) is the eyes that the reader sees through.

For example, should the POV be in first person, then we’d be seeing only what one particular person sees and feels. The pronouns used here would be as if you were part of a one-sided dialogue with this character

Meanwhile, if the POV is in third person, then you’d be seeing things from the narrator’s point of view. In this POV, the most common pronouns are “he” and “she”.

There are other POVs, but third person and first person are the most used formats in stories. They both give a different perspective, so what they see and how they interpret that thing may be different.

For example, if you were reading a book in first person and some person the character had never met before just came up to them and began to yell at them that it was over and they were breaking up, the character would probably feel highly overwhelmed and weirded out. In this POV, the person who came up to them would be painted as someone strange and either someone to be stayed away from or someone to confront based on the character.

But, if this were played out in third person, we would see it as an outside force watching the situation. In this perspective, we might find out that the person who came up was being followed and that they needed to create a distraction revolving around them in order to get away. Instead of this character being presented as strange or weird, it would feel like they were doing something reasonable for their situation.

This is why A.) Point of view can affect what details a writer sees and records. If everybody who has been on the Titanic when it sunk wrote a book about their experience on the ship, each one would have a different thing to say, which is the same concept of “different people have different views, values, and thoughts”

Oops! A journalist made a mistake! The following paragraphs were written using the passive voice. Rewrite them in an active voice. Explain how the two versions differ. Why is active voice a better choice for journalistic writing?

A college entrance exam was taken by nearly 100 students on Saturday. Results from the exam were received by the school’s principal who reported that the exam was failed by over half the students who took it.
Recently, talks have been conducted by the administration to determine the amount of aid to send to foreign countries. Previously, the countries were sent nearly $1 million in aid each year, but it was decided by the administration that countries would receive at least half that amount this year.
A local construction worker was killed by a faulty ladder last week. The worker had been putting tiles onto a roof when he was left hanging after the ladder fell. Unable to keep his grip, the fingers of the man slipped and were the cause of his fall.

Answers

Answer:

In this very simple sentence, the active voice is the better choice. It is more concise (shorter), more direct, and stronger. The passive voice, in this case, is unnecessarily wordy and clunky.

To rewrite in active voice, you simply make the subject act upon the object (rather than the object being acted on by the subject). For example, passive voice would be, “The cat was chased by the dog.” Active voice would be, “The dog chased the cat.” With that being said…

Maddy is excited about learning to swim. She had been faking it for too long. She could splash around the shallow end, but her friends preferred games of tag in the diving well. She could not manage that.

The class description says it is a "strokes class for any age." It sounded perfect. Maddy was ready to stretch herself into an impressive freestyle. Soon she'd tackle breaststroke. She knew she could do it with a little help.

The classes were lining up, and as Maddy tugged on a bathing cap, she realized from afar that none of the swimmers was over four years old. Each of them was with a mom or dad; some were even being carried.

When the first student was called, he jumped in and demonstrated a back float. The next student cannonballed her way into the pool.

Maddy retreated behind the snack machine. She backed against the wall.

"Is Maddy Jefferson here?" an instructor called.
Silence hovered over the shallow end.

Ocean Noise

When we think about the pollution of our oceans, many of us think of oil spills that dirty the waters and harm a variety of ocean life. Or, we might think of people in boats who litter the waters with their trash. After all, how many times in the news do we hear about ships that leak dangerous chemicals into the water? What we may not realize, though, is that there is another danger that is just as harmful to ocean life as any chemical or other dangerous material: ocean noise.

Many of us think of the oceans as silent places. On the contrary, they are filled with a variety of sounds. On any given day, one might hear the calls of dolphins as they swim through the waters. Whales use sounds to keep track of each other. Sea lions talk to each other to find food. Even the tiniest of shrimp make a snapping sound. There are also sounds caused by wind or rain upon the waters. Sound also plays an important role in the daily life of various ocean animals, many of which depend upon their sharp sound detection skills to survive. With increased activities by people on many of the oceans’ waters, the noise has increased so much that it is beginning to cause damage to the oceans as well as to the animals that live in them.

Ocean noise is the term used to describe the human-made noise occurring at increasing rates in the ocean. The noise comes from many different sources: large ships, small boats with motors, and jet skis, among others. There are also underwater exploration activities such as mining, as well as radar activities of ships. One of the most harmful types of ocean noise occurs with offshore oil drilling and seismic oil explorations. Air guns are instruments that are used to determine the location of oil and natural gas beneath the sea floor. They make a sound that can damage the hearing of ocean animals.

We know that sound travels faster in water than it does in air. This means that sounds in the oceans can travel for many, many miles in a short period of time. Unfortunately, sounds made by people are much louder than sounds made by ocean animals.

What this means is that sounds caused by noisy engines or radar equipment used by ships can upset the everyday activities of the creatures that live in the ocean. For instance, humpback whales use songs to talk to each other. Scientists have discovered that the whales’ system of “talking” can be disturbed by loud noises. This makes it harder for the whales to find each other. The stranding of whales and dolphins has been found to increase immediately after naval sonar maneuvers. Sea lions are another type of animal that depends on sounds to communicate with other sea lions. Ocean noise can make it difficult for them to find food. Ocean noise can disturb migration routes of whales and other animals that travel to different places.

However, scientists and other researchers are working hard to find a solution to this threat to marine life. Since 2003, the use of low-frequency active (LFA) sonar equipment by the United States Navy has been tightly limited because its effects have been shown to cause harm to many ocean animals. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has released a plan to reduce ocean noise that will work better than past attempts to reduce the noise.

Other people are helping as well. Some fishing companies use special equipment that makes a “pinging” sound to keep certain kinds of ocean life from getting caught in its fishing nets. The National Park Service completed a study that tracked tour cruise ships and made an effort to reduce the number of tours. They also tried to increase the “quiet time” for humpback whales by scheduling tours farther apart.

Local conservation groups are also asking people to be more careful about using jet skis, motorboats, and other equipment that might disturb areas where ocean life is particularly fragile. Also, closer attention is being paid to where ships are traveling to make sure that, whenever possible, they stay away from waters where large numbers of ocean animals live.

With the increase in ocean noise, measures must be taken to control or, at the very least, curb its growth.

What argument does the author make in "Ocean Noise"?

Marine animals contribute more to noise pollution in the ocean than humans.

A reduction in noise pollution will do little to help marine life.

Progress in noise reduction has been stalled by the use of sonar equipment.

People must take immediate action to reduce ocean noise pollution to help marine life.

Answers

The argument that the author makes in "Ocean Noise" is that: "People must take immediate action to reduce ocean noise pollution to help marine life." (Option D)

What is an Argument?

An argument is a logical position that a person makes with respect to an idea or a topic. In this case, the topic is "Ocean Noise".

Hence from the first paragraph, we can see that the argument of the author is that: "People must take immediate action to reduce ocean noise pollution to help marine life."

Capitalize M of my, since the word at the beginning of a sentence requires capitalization.Capitalize M of Mike, since names are always capitalized (such as roads, of people, places, etc) even at the beginning of a sentence.Capitalize N and I of Nantucket Island, because that is a place therefore the I should be capitalized along with the island's name.Capitalize the M in Massachusetts, since the name of places (such as a state in this scenario) needs to be capitalized.Add a period after Massachusetts, since this is the end of the statement aka sentence.Capitalize the W of we, since the word is at the beginning of a sentence.Add a comma after home and after Hampshire, since this is a side piece of information, it doesn't have a set place in the sentence. This makes it (the fact that their home is in New Hampshire) have its own spot within the sentence.Capitalize the C, N, and H of Concord, New Hampshire, since this is a place, which requires capitalization. Add a comma between Concord and New, since this sets the difference between the state and city/county within said state.Capitalize N and C of Nantucket and Queen, since this is the name of the ferry, it needs to be capitalized.Add a period after Queen, since this marks the end of the statement/sentence.Capitalize the T of the, since this is the beginning of a sentence, which requires capitalization.Capitalize the G and B of Grebers Bay, since this is a place (a bay) and needs to be capitalized.Add a period after Bay, to mark the end of the statement/sentence.Capitalize the T of the, since this is the beginning of the sentence.Add commas after sailors and us. This is a list of items, therefore a comma is used to separate the items. (Pro-tip: make sure to add commas only when the list of things exceeds 3. Also, make sure to add a comma to that last word right before 'and' it can change the meaning if you don't!)Add a period after pleasant, this marks the end of the statement/sentence.Capitalize the S of suddenly, this is required since this is the first word of the sentence.Add a space in between another and boat, since these are two separate words there's no need for a hyphen; just a space!Add ending punctuation after us, this can be an exclamation point (!) or period (.) although the exclamation point fits the context more, hence why I used it instead. The ending punctuation is needed since it signifies the end of a statement/sentance.Add a paragraph break after us, since someone is speaking, which requires a new paragraph.Add quotation marks around what the men said (which is 'watch out' and 'we've lost control of our boat') put a starter (") before watch and we've, then an end (") after out and boat.Capitalize the W of watch, since this is the beginning of the quote (what the men said).Add a comma after out, since this is not all the men said, and is a part of the entire quote (of what they said).Capitalize the W of we've, since this is the beginning of a continued quote.Add an apostrophe between we and ve since we've is we + have, making it require a '.Add an exclamation point after boat.ETC
