Read the excerpt from Immigrant Kids by Russell Freedman.

The writer Angelo Pellegrini has recalled his own family’s detention at Ellis Island:

We lived there for three days – Mother and we five children, the youngest of whom was three years old. Because of the rigorous physical examination that we had to submit to, particularly of the eyes, there was this terrible anxiety that one of us might be rejected. And if one of us was, what would the rest of the family do? My sister was indeed momentarily rejected; she had been so ill and had cried so much that her eyes were absolutely bloodshot, and Mother was told, "Well, we can’t let her in.” But fortunately, Mother was an indomitable spirit and finally made them understand that if her child had a few hours’ rest and a little bit to eat she would be all right. In the end we did get through.
Most immigrants passed through Ellis Island in about one day. Carrying all their worldly possessions, they left the examination hall and waited on the dock for the ferry that would take them to Manhattan, a mile away. Some of them still faced long journeys overland before they reached their final destination. Others would head directly for the teeming immigrant neighborhoods of New York City.

1. Describe the setting of the novel, include time and place.

2. What is the initial reaction of the boys to being without adult supervision? How do you think being without adults will affect the group?

3. What leadership qualities does each of the older boys (Jack, Ralph, and Piggy) have? Do you think Ralph is the right choice for leader in this situation? Explain your answer.

4. What is your impression of Simon? What separates him from the others?

5. What are your thoughts about the plot in the first two chapters? Make some predictions.

alright, lord of the flies !! quite a good book, in my opinion. here’s what i think about the questions, and what my answers are! i had similar questions last year, about LOTF.

1. LOTF takes place on an unnamed island in 1950, during a worldwide war.

2. at first, the boys are scared. they don’t know how they’ll survive without the people who have been doing basically everything for them for their lives, so far. their initial reaction, because of this, is to panic. nobody was following or “laying down” any rules at this point, they were just looking for things to get them through the night.

3. unlike the rest of the boys, ralph doesn’t quite go “crazy” at the beginning. he is nicer to piggy than jack, and tries to be civil, despite being trapped without any adults in sight. ralph has the characteristics of a great leader, including kindness, responsibility, the ability to work hard and stay strong, and of course, popularity. he became chief for these reasons, mainly, and that’s what sets him apart from the other boys.

4. simon is the “bright” one amongst the boys. he knows much more than they do, thus making him a valuable “asset”, in some of the boys’ eyes. however, he is also quite the mysterious character, as we see him first introduced as member of jack’s choir. some of his unique traits are his helpfulness and loyalty. he stays loyal for the duration of his life on that island, which is something the other boys could never do.

5. the first two chapters are more of introductions, than anything else. chapter one is the full introduction to the main idea of the story, who the characters are, and what their long-term goal is throughout the book. the boys are in fear more than anything in the first two chapters, making them have little to no action. chapter two includes some pieces such as what their plan is as to how they’ll get out, what lifestyle they develop, and how they’ll survive without their parents—or any adults—around.

Consider how you would fill in this graphic organizer and summarize the essay “The Teen Brain: Still Under Construction.” First, write down the central idea of the essay and list the most important details. Then write a summary in your own words. Be sure to use full sentences.

Answers

Answer:

Central idea: The human brain keeps growing throughout the teenage years, and this growth impacts behavior.

Supporting details:

Scientists believe that the loss of synapses as a child matures is a part of the process by which the brain becomes more efficient.

The volume of gray matter in the brain reaches a high point during adolescence; it isn’t until the early 20s that the brain resembles an adult brain.

One interpretation of all these findings is that in teenagers the parts of the brain involved in emotional responses are very active, even more so than in adults. The parts of the teenage brain involved in keeping emotional, impulsive responses in check are still being developed.

Research on the brain may help adults (particularly caregivers) understand the importance of creating an environment in which teenagers can explore and experiment, while helping them avoid behavior that is destructive to themselves and others.

Summary:

The article’s main point is that the brain is still changing and growing a lot during the teenage years. And this change impacts behavior. Scientists have studied the brain by doing brain scans, and they have found that the outer layer of the brain is still growing and changing during adolescence. The scans show that this layer of the brain doesn’t stop growing until people reach their early 20s. The article then says that these changes might be related to risky behavior in teens. That’s because teenage brains have already developed the areas that are involved in feeling emotions, but the areas that would help you control emotions are not developed. Finally, the article says that more research should be done on the teenage brain. This research might be helpful in understanding why teens act the way they do.

SHARKS' TEETH
Langston Carter

The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.

We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

Read this sentence from the text:

THE VOYAGES OF DOCTOR DOLITTLE
By Hugh Lofting

Chapter 1: The Cobbler's Son
My name was Tommy Stubbins, son of Jacob Stubbins, the cobbler of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh; and I was nine and a half years old. At that time Puddleby was only quite a small town. A river ran through the middle of it; and over this river there was a very old stone bridge, called Kingsbridge, which led you from the market-place on one side to the churchyard on the other.

Sailing-ships came up this river from the sea and anchored near the bridge. I used to go down and watch the sailors unloading the ships upon the river-wall. The sailors sang strange songs as they pulled upon the ropes; and I learned these songs by heart. And I would sit on the river-wall with my feet dangling over the water and sing with the men, pretending to myself that I too was a sailor.

For I longed always to sail away with those brave ships when they turned their backs on Puddleby Church and went creeping down the river again, across the wide lonely marshes to the sea. I longed to go with them out into the world to seek my fortune in foreign lands—Africa, India, China and Peru! When they got round the bend in the river and the water was hidden from view, you could still see their huge brown sails towering over the roofs of the town, moving onward slowly—like some gentle giants that walked among the houses without noise. What strange things would they have seen, I wondered, when next they came back to anchor at Kingsbridge! And, dreaming of the lands I had never seen, I'd sit on there, watching till they were out of sight.

D.

Explanation:

It states that in the last sentence of the paragraph that the old traditions for the people who most likely worshipped the Kota were lost, and their old ways changed greatly over time. Because of this, I'd logically assume that many of the descendants of the original tribesmen who looked up to this figure see Kota today as a remnant of an old tradition or way of life, thus this is why I selected D.
