Select the items that describe possible problems with being unemployed and not earning income.

People cannot afford to buy food.
People cannot support their families.
People cannot afford medical treatment.
People cannot afford housing.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

When someone is unemployed and not making any income for him or herself, or her or his family, a lot of impacts would be felt by them. They would not be able to afford food for themselves, or support their families in any way that requires monetary relief. They would also have problems in paying for medical treatments. Problems with paying rents and mortgages would also be faced by them.

Thus, the best answer to the question would be all of the above.

Answer:

A) People cannot afford to buy food.

B) People cannot support their families.

C) People cannot afford medical treatment.

D) People cannot afford housing.

Explanation:

Those are all problems that you face without money. Money is the central controlling thing of society. You need it to do anything that you want. Either to move around the city, to eat, to have fun, and even to enter places, sometimes. Without a single coin, you cannot do anything and you might expect to often be removed from a place for not having the money to "stay there".

the characters of the short story mint tea by christine craig

Answers

In Mint Tea by Christine Craig we have the theme of pity, charity, anger, loss, connection, happiness, innocence and security. Narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator the reader realises after reading the story that Craig may be exploring the theme of pity and charity. Florence takes Esmie into her home because she pities her. She cannot understand how a girl of eighteen can be abandoned by the Home with nothing but their personal belongings. This may be important as it is possible that Craig is criticizing institutional life. How a child can spend their formative years without learning anything or being prepared for the outside world. Something which is very much the case when it comes to Esmie. If anything Esmie is lost in the outside world having spent so long being institutionalized. It is as though she has been forgotten about by society. Something which raises anger within Florence while she is talking to the Matron on the telephone. Florence is fully aware that if Esmie is left to her own devices things will not work out for her. Hence Florence offering Esmie a room in her home.

It is also possible that Craig is exploring the theme of loss. Both Florence and Esmie have lost people they have loved. With Florence it is her mother, father and Annie and with Esmie it is her mother and father. There is no sense that either woman has ever reconciled their feelings when it comes to the sense of loss that they feel. Despite the passing of time Florence with limited memories can remember some of the good times she spent with her family. While Esmie can remember the fire that killed her parents. The fire which killed Esmie’s parents might also be important as not only has Esmie been scarred by the incident but she is also afraid to lose people that she has become close to. Juliet and Florence being examples. In reality Esmie does not wish to lose the connection she feels she has with people who she becomes close to. It is for this reason that she decides to make Florence a cup of mint tea. If anything the cup of mint tea may symbolise a sense of connection for Esmie. A device that will reassure Esmie that everything will be okay. That she has security in her life.

It may also be a case that Craig is using the flowers mentioned in the story to symbolise happiness for Florence. Just as the flowers were in full bloom. Florence may have felt as though her own life was in full bloom. She was surrounded by family without a care in the world. Her family were alive (and healthy) and she had yet to set out on her life as a teacher. If anything it may have been a time of not only happiness but innocence too. An innocence that has slowly been chiselled away with the passing of time. The bible which Florence gives Esmie and the fact that they attend church together might also further suggest a strong connection symbolically between Florence and Esmie. Florence wants Esmie to live a good life one in which she will not stray. In reality Florence wants the best for Esmie though she only has gotten to know her. It is for this reason that she wants Esmie to join the church choir. Something that Florence feels may be a positive influence in Esmie’s life. As to why Esmie does not wish to join the choir is difficult to say but it is possible that she does not wish to get too close to others. In fear that they too might abandon her as she has been abandoned by the Home.

The end of the story is interesting as Craig highlights just how connected to one another Florence and Esmie might be. By listening to Esmie’s story about how her parents died Florence herself reflects on the death of her own parents and Annie. Which may leave some readers to suspect that like Esmie, Florence has nobody in her life. There is a cousin but that relationship seems to be conducted at a distance (telephone). At no stage in the story does anybody actually visit Florence’s home and her only engagement with the outside world is when she calls the Matron of the home, when she goes to Church and when she goes shopping. Which may be the point that Craig is attempting to make. She may be suggesting that both Florence and Esmie are reliant on each other. Even if Florence may not be aware of this. Esmie on the other hand has grown attached to Florence as Florence provides stability to Esmie’s life. Just as the Home might have. However the difference between the Home and Florence’s home is the fact that Florence wishes for Esmie to reach goals she knows she can reach in life. Though she may have retired. Florence remains a teacher at heart.Answer

Read the following passage carefully and then answer items based on what is stated or implied.

A cry went up from the pack running after him when he fell. There was tension and hysteria in that concerted cry. And other things too, but he scarcely thought about it at all. Three women fell out of the race and clutched their sides and laughed; one of them fell on the sidewalk laughing like that, her belly puffing up huge with laughter, and subsiding again, letting it go.

He scrambled up to his feet, their cries in his ears, spurring him on; he must run, run until he dropped, going God knows where. He scrambled to his feet, his fingers clawing at the asphalt, stumbled on, sounds filling his ears… shriek of a locomotive whistle…coming up, rising to a pitch, and going away…he turned the corner into the street that was at right angles to the one he had come down from the Slaughter House gates… he was running blind before, reacting to the compulsion of his fear…but now he saw his objective and it lent his effort purpose…a long line of freight cars was coming down from the railway yard along the lines that ran across the street, going towards No.1 Pier.

The gates were lowered across the street stopping traffic; all he had to do was to get across the lines before that string of freight cars. They would cut off his pursuit for the time it would take that long train to cross the street. Trains always slowed down going into the dockyard; sometimes stopped, straddling the street. All he had was to get across.

The man operating the gate yelled at him. He paid no heed. He had balanced it in his mind to nicety, figured he’d just have time to get across. He went under the gate. Voices shouted in his ears …the scream of the locomotive whistle rising to a crescendo…he paid no heed. The train was hurtling toward him, but he had time, he could make it.

The narrator was recounting an incident where the babe took a strong liking and admiration for fruits sold by an Italian vendor. This reached a point where the babe could no longer resist the urge and therefore decided to help himself with some of those fruits, he was hoping to do this capitalizing on the fact that the fruit vendor was engrossed in his newspaper and a passer-by was oblivious of the happenings around them. The babe also wanted to mask his movement by blending his movement with the sound of the train, desperation led the babe to steal a lemon fruit where he was subsequently caught. The author's message revealed guilt, greed, and the concept of hero worship. Both characters came to the sudden realities of despair, guilt, and anger. The conflict of the story is the avaricious desire going on in the babe's mind to possess the fruits sold by the Italian vendor, which in the end led to him being caught.

The resolution arrived at the end of the story are;

(a) crime doesn't pay, no matter how smart one is they are always going to be caught.

(b) crime always comes with huge psychological consequences as evident in the babe's state of mind where the author describes the babe as breathless, throwing quick and cunning glances revealing an unsettled individual.

(c) Finally, the story reveals that the babe was not punished by the vendor which is in contrast to the negative attribute in which the Italian vendor was described.
