The importance of the human skeleton is very great, and the horror with which it is commonly regarded is somewhat
mysterious. Without claiming for the human skeleton a wholly conventional beauty, we may assert that he is certainly not
uglier than a bult-dog, whose popularity never wanes, and that he has a vastly more cheerful and ingratiating expression
But just as man is mysteriously ashamed of the skeletons of the trees in winter, so he is mysteriously ashamed of the
skeleton of himself in death. It is a singular thing altogether, this horror of the architecture of things. One would think it
would be most unwise in a man to be afraid of a skeleton, since Nature has set curious and quite insuperable obstacles to
his running away from it.

One ground exists for this terror a strange idea has infected humanity that the skeleton is typical of death. A man might
as well
say that a factory chimney was typical of bankruptcy. The factory may be left naked after ruin, the skeleton may be
left naked after bodily dissolution, but both of them have had a lively and workmanlike life of their own, all the pulleys
creaking, all the wheels turning, in the House of Livelihood as in the House of Life. There is no reason why this creature
(new, as I fancy, to art), the living skeleton, should not become the essential symbol of life

The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.

We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

Effie rubbed and cried—not real crying, but the kind your eye does all by itself without your being miserable inside your mind—and then she went to her father to have the thing in her eye taken out. Effie's father was a doctor, so of course he knew how to take things out of eyes.

When he had gotten the thing out, he said: "This is very curious." Effie had often got things in her eye before, and her father had always seemed to think it was natural—rather tiresome and naughty perhaps, but still natural. He had never before thought it curious.

Effie stood holding her handkerchief to her eye, and said: "I don't believe it's out." People always say this when they have had something in their eyes.

"Oh, yes—it's out," said the doctor. "Here it is, on the brush. This is very interesting."

Effie had never heard her father say that about anything that she had any share in. She said: "What?"

The doctor carried the brush very carefully across the room, and held the point of it under his microscope—then he twisted the brass screws of the microscope, and looked through the top with one eye.

"Dear me," he said. "Dear, dear me! Four well-developed limbs; a long caudal appendage; five toes, unequal in lengths, almost like one of the Lacertidae, yet there are traces of wings." The creature under his eye wriggled a little in the castor oil, and he went on: "Yes; a bat-like wing. A new specimen, undoubtedly. Effie, run round to the professor and ask him to be kind enough to step in for a few minutes."

"You might give me sixpence, Daddy," said Effie, "because I did bring you the new specimen. I took great care of it inside my eye, and my eye does hurt."

The doctor was so pleased with the new specimen that he gave Effie a shilling, and presently the professor stepped round. He stayed to lunch, and he and the doctor quarreled very happily all the afternoon about the name and the family of the thing that had come out of Effie's eye.

But at teatime another thing happened. Effie's brother Harry fished something out of his tea, which he thought at first was an earwig. He was just getting ready to drop it on the floor, and end its life in the usual way, when it shook itself in the spoon—spread two wet wings, and flopped onto the tablecloth. There it sat, stroking itself with its feet and stretching its wings, and Harry said: "Why, it's a tiny newt!"

The professor leaned forward before the doctor could say a word. "I'll give you half a crown for it, Harry, my lad," he said, speaking very fast; and then he picked it up carefully on his handkerchief.

"It is a new specimen," he said, "and finer than yours, Doctor."

It was a tiny lizard, about half an inch long—with scales and wings.

So now the doctor and the professor each had a specimen, and they were both very pleased. But before long these specimens began to seem less valuable. For the next morning, when the knife-boy was cleaning the doctor's boots, he suddenly dropped the brushes and the boot and the blacking, and screamed out that he was burnt.

And from inside the boot came crawling a lizard as big as a kitten, with large, shiny wings.

"Why," said Effie, "I know what it is. It is a dragon like the one St. George killed."

And Effie was right. That afternoon Towser was bitten in the garden by a dragon about the size of a rabbit, which he had tried to chase, and the next morning all the papers were full of the wonderful "winged lizards" that were appearing all over the country. The papers would not call them dragons, because, of course, no one believes in dragons nowadays—and at any rate the papers were not going to be so silly as to believe in fairy stories. At first there were only a few, but in a week or two the country was simply running alive with dragons of all sizes, and in the air you could sometimes see them as thick as a swarm of bees. They all looked alike except as to size. They were green with scales, and they had four legs and a long tail and great wings like bats' wings, only the wings were a pale, half-transparent yellow, like the gear-boxes on bicycles.

Dogs Make Life Great

Let's face it, they don't call dogs "man's best friend" for nothing. They are sweet, they love us, and they do work for us. There is simply nothing better than a dog. If humans have learned to survive against saber-toothed predators, stampeding herds, and enduring famine, dogs have been right there. As Robin to our Batman, as Scooby Doo to our Shaggy, dogs have been there through thick and thin in our darkest hours. After all we've been through together, how could anyone disagree that dogs are the best pet any human could have?

First, we get massive health benefits from dogs. They calm us down when we are stressed. Countless service dogs are trained every year to go into nursing homes and other facilities to provide comfort to patients. These therapy dogs have been shown to lower blood pressure and calm distressed patients. Dogs also bring sweet, sweet bacteria into our homes. These bacteria help build our immune systems and make us healthier. Studies have shown that people with dogs get sick less often. In addition, growing up with a dog in your home may make you less prone to dog-related allergies as you grow up. Finally, because dogs need regular exercise, dog owners tend to be more fit than those who do not own dogs or own only cats.

Second, dogs just make us happier. New studies have found a lower rate of depression in dog owners. In part because dogs force their owners to be more active, it is likely that dog-owners just cannot stay cooped up at home all the time. This activity level also makes it easier to meet people, stay socially engaged, and feel a sense of belonging. They are dependable friends as well, always ready with a sympathetic ear, a soft belly to rub, and a willing smile. If your day seems like a version of the zombie apocalypse, ten minutes of playing fetch will certainly keep those zombies at bay until you can get back in the game.

Finally, it's all about cute. Sure other pets can be cute, but consider tail wagging. What other animal has such a universally understood expression of joy? How can you not give into that sweet face, holding a stick, waiting patiently to be taken out to play? And if you have any doubts, you must not have seen a dog rolling on its back, tongue lolling about, head swishing back and forth, scooting first one way and then the next as if competing in a silly worm dance.

Many cat owners may argue with this position, but dogs really are the best companions. They bring joy, like a bluebird brings spring, or a rainbow brings a promise. They teach us about patience. They teach us about faith, waiting patiently—no matter how many times we leave without them—for that one time they get to load into the car and go with us. Always ready to go, always ready to wait longer, they make us hurry home at the end of the day for just a little unconditional love.
