An Excerpt from “Optimism”
by Helen Keller
1 Could we choose our environment, and were desire in human undertakings synonymous with
endowment, all men would, I suppose, be optimists. Certainly most of us regard happiness as
the proper end of all earthly enterprise. The will to be happy animates alike the philosopher, the
prince and the chimney-sweep. No matter how dull, or how mean, or how wise a man is, he feels
that happiness is his indisputable right.
2 It is curious to observe what different ideals of happiness people cherish, and in what singular
places they look for this well-spring of their life. Many look for it in the hoarding of riches, some
in the pride of power, and others in the achievements of art and literature; a few seek it in the
exploration of their own minds, or in the search for knowledge.
3 Most people measure their happiness in terms of physical pleasure and material possession.
Could they win some visible goal which they have set on the horizon, how happy they would be!
Lacking this gift or that circumstance, they would be miserable. If happiness is to be so
measured, I who cannot hear or see have every reason to sit in a corner with folded hands and
weep. If I am happy in spite of my deprivations, if my happiness is so deep that it is a faith, so
thoughtful that it becomes a philosophy of life,—if, in short, I am an optimist, my testimony to
the creed of optimism is worth hearing....
4 Once I knew the depth where no hope was, and darkness lay on the face of all things. Then
love came and set my soul free. Once I knew only darkness and stillness. Now I know hope and
joy. Once I fretted and beat myself against the wall that shut me in. Now I rejoice in the
consciousness that I can think, act and attain heaven. My life was without past or future; death,
the pessimist would say, “a consummation devoutly to be wished.” But a little word from the
fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the
rapture of living. Night fled before the day of thought, and love and joy and hope came up in a
passion of obedience to knowledge. Can anyone who has escaped such captivity, who has felt
the thrill and glory of freedom, be a pessimist?
5 My early experience was thus a leap from bad to good. If I tried, I could not check the
momentum of my first leap out of the dark; to move breast forward is a habit learned suddenly
at that first moment of release and rush into the light. With the first word I used intelligently, I
learned to live, to think, to hope. Darkness cannot shut me in again. I have had a glimpse of the
shore, and can now live by the hope of reaching it.
6 So my optimism is no mild and unreasoning satisfaction. A poet once said I must be happy
because I did not see the bare, cold present, but lived in a beautiful dream. I do live in a
beautiful dream; but that dream is the actual, the present,—not cold, but warm; not bare, but
furnished with a thousand blessings. The very evil which the poet supposed would be a cruel

In a game of tug of war, team one pulls to the right with a force of 500 newtons and team two pulls to the left with a force of 600 newtons. What is the net force?
Answer:
Explanation:
There is no set way to do this. All you have to do is define left and right. Left will be minus and right will be the opposite --- plus.
That is completely arbitrary. It could be the other way around. It does not matter.
Left is minus so: - 600 N is the force going left.
Right plus so: + 500 N
Now just add.
Net Force = +500 - 600
Net Force = - 100 N
So the Net Force is - 100 N going to the left.

1. According to the picture, which is the least dense?
O A. the chess piece
O B. the toy soldier
O C. the liquid in the container
O D. There is no way to tell,
According to the picture, the chess piece is the least dense. The correct option is A.
The amount of mass that a substance has in relation to its volume is referred to as its density. It is a measurement of how closely together the molecules or particles are arranged within a given object or material.
Typically, floating objects are less dense than the liquid they are in. The fact that the chess piece is floating on the water suggests that it is less dense than the liquid.
It might be an alternative, though, if the toy soldier is also floating and not submerged. More visual context is necessary for precise determination.
Thus, the correct option is A.

in a closed system of a cannon and cannonball, which changes would both results in an increase in the kinetic energy of the cannonball when fired from the cannon?
A) decrease the mass of the cannon or decrease the mass of the cannonball
B) increase the mass of the cannon or decrease the mass of the cannonball
C) decrease the mass of the cannon or increase the mass of the cannonball
D) increase the mass of the cannon or increase the mass of the cannonball
Changes that would results in an increase in the kinetic energy of the cannonball in a closed system, when it is fired from the cannon is B:increase the mass of the cannon or decrease the mass of the cannonball.
A closed system can be considered one that is not been affected by external forces. With the conservation of momentum, there would be collisions as well inexplosions. This explains that when a cannon is fired, there would be gain of forward momentum by the cannon ball, while the cannon experience backward momentum. For the kinetic energy of the cannonball to increase, when fired from the cannon, then the mass is the cannon would be increased or the mass of the cannonball would be decreased.
Therefore, option B is correct.

Describe the shape of the earth besides round and tell me how it rotates
Answer:
The Earth is in hydrostatic equilibrium pretty much. Which is to say that if it were entirely liquid it would still be the same shape ignoring minor differences like mountain ranges that are in any case indistinguishable on the large scale.
A spinning liquid sphere will flatten out somewhat at the axis poles and expand somewhat in its equatorial region and that’s the way the Earth is.

How are acceleration and velocity related
A: An object with constant velocity also has constant acceleration
B: Acceleration and velocity are not related. C:Acceleration describes how fast the velocity of an object is changing,
D: Acceleration only occurs when the speed of an object changes, but velocity can change if speed or direction changes
Answer:
answer is C
Explanation:
acceleration is rate of changing velocity in a time
Suppose a ball is dropped from a building. What is the change of velocity between the first and fifth seconds of its flight
Answer: 39.2m/s
Explanation:
Due to the free falling body, the acceleration of the ball is 9.8 m/s^2, and its initial velocity is 0 m/s.
V(t) = g*t
The change of velocity from t=1 to t=5:
Delta V = 9.8*(5-1) = 39.2 m/s
An object starts from rest and uniformly accelerates at a rate of 1.25 m/s2 for 7.0 seconds.
(a) What is the object's displacement during this 7-second time period?
(b) What is the object's final velocity?
(c) How many seconds does it take the object to have a displacement of 22 meters?
Explanation:
Since its accelerating, the velocity vs time graph is linear
For displacement we need initial velocity (which is zero because it starts from rest) and final velocity (which is calculatee thro acceleration formula
A= (vf - vi)/t
a= vf-0/t
1.25=vf / 7
1.25*7=vf
8.75 = vf
Now for displacement plug all the values in
X = 1/2(vf-vi)/t formula
The displacement (x) is 30.625 m
For part 3, we know new displacement that is 22m , the final and initial velocities are the same so just plug in the values for same formula above
The answer is t = 5.02

What shape is the graph produced by a force vs acceleration graph?
A. Linear
B. Quadratic
C. Circular
D. Triangular
The answer to the question What shape is the graph produced by a force vs acceleration graph is A. Linear
Since Force, F = ma where m = mass and a = acceleration. For constant mass, F ∝ a. That is, F is directly proportional to acceleration, a.
Since this is a linear relationship, the graph of force vs acceleration will be linear.

What describes the pressure in a contained fluid?
1: unknown as long as the fluid is contained
2: the same throughout the fluid
3: higher in some places and lower in other places
Answer:
3) higher in some places nd lower In other places
Explanation:
The pressure in a fluid is given by the law
p = p0 + pgh
where
p0 is the atmospheric pressure
p is the fluid's density
g is the acceleration of gravity
h is the depth at which the pressure is calculated
As we see, the pressure depends on the value of h (depth): therefore, points which are located at more depth experience a larger pressure than points located near the fluid's surface.
